Fabio Di Càsola, the clarinettist, was the first clarinettist in eighteen years to win first prize at the Geneva Competition in 1990.

Brahms initially intended to stop composing in 1890 at age 57, but his encounter with clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld inspired him to write four more chamber works with clarinet.
