The impetus for Anthony Burgess to compose Mr Burgess's Almanack came from American double-bassist Jonathan Haskell, who invited him to write a new work for fewer than 15 musicians.
Performer Biography
The Brown University Orchestra, which performs on this recording, has a history dating back to at least 1858 and has won seven ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music.
Compositional Technique
Mr Burgess's Almanack is structured around the twelve musical intervals within an octave, with each of its twelve central movements based on a different interval, from minor second to perfect octave.
