Composition History

The titles of the movements in Akhunov's 'Actus tragicus' are taken from biblical passages and texts by Martin Luther, which were also used in J.S. Bach's cantata BWV 106, also known as 'Actus tragicus'.

Recording & Production

Both the Cello Concerto 'Actus tragicus' by Sergey Akhunov and 'TSD for Cello and Orchestra' by Giya Kancheli were commissioned by the Moscow International Festival VIVACELLO.

Performer Biography

Boris Andrianov, the cellist on this album, is the founder of the Vivacello festival, for which both pieces on this recording were specifically written.
