Marco Antonio Centorio, born around 1600 in Vercelli, Italy, began his musical studies as one of six choirboys at the Collegio degli Innocenti, an institution providing singers for Vercelli Cathedral.

This album features the world premiere recording of previously unpublished works by Centorio, performed based on a modern critical edition.

Composition History

None of Centorio's compositions appeared in printed editions during his lifetime; the works on this recording are from manuscript scores kept in the Vercelli Chapter Archive.

The Cappella Musicale della Cattedrale di Vercelli, led by Monsignor Denis Silano, aims to revive the 16th and 17th-century musical heritage of Vercelli Cathedral.

Interpretation

For the motet Spargite flores, a boy soprano was chosen to reflect the historical practice of only male voices (children and adults) participating in church choirs during Centorio's era.
