Composer Biography
Chopin, despite his strong identification with the piano, composed several chamber works, showing a clear preference for the cello.
Composition History
Liszt's composition of the three books of Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) for piano spanned approximately forty years of his career, with the first book started in 1837 and parts of the third finished in 1877.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Liszt, the creator of the piano recital and modern piano technique, viewed the piano as his 'word and his life,' capable of expressing immense power, emotion, and contrast.
Composition History
Chopin dedicated his Trio for piano, violin, and cello, Op. 8, to Prince Antoni Radziwiłł, a great music-lover, cellist, and composer, who hosted Chopin at his hunting lodge in Antonin.
Interpretation
The Trio Chausson's transcription of Chopin's Introduction and Polonaise brillante, Op. 3, for piano, violin, and cello, involved creating a violin line that extends or completes Chopin's original writing.
Compositional Technique
Chopin considered replacing the violin with a viola in his Trio, Op. 8, believing the viola's warm timbre would better complement the cello, as the work has a rather dark coloration.
