Composer Biography
Beethoven's Op. 11 Trio is linked to a rivalry with virtuoso pianist Daniel Steibelt; after a performance, Steibelt baited Beethoven by improvising on the same popular theme, leading to Beethoven's furious reaction.
Composer Biography
Alfred Schnittke, a prominent Russian composer, sometimes faced official disapproval from the Soviet regime for his modernism and was temporarily banned from traveling outside Russia.
Composition History
Beethoven's Trio, Op. 11, nicknamed 'Gassenhauer,' gets its name from a popular tune from Joseph Weigl's comedic drama L'amor marinaro, which was so well-known that people hummed it in Vienna's public lanes.
Recording & Production
This album features two versions of Alfred Schnittke's Suite in the Old Style: one with poems by Lia Purpura and an alternate version without them.
Composition History
Alfred Schnittke's Suite in the Old Style, written in 1972, draws upon music he composed for film soundtracks, which often allowed him more freedom than his concert works under the Soviet regime.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Alfred Schnittke's compositional technique, which he called 'polystylism,' aimed to unify serious and light music by freely mixing musical styles.
