Gordon Crosse studied with Egon Wellesz and Bernard Rose at Oxford University from 1958 to 1963, where he developed a passion for theatre and opera.

After growing disenchanted with his profession, Gordon Crosse gave up composition in 1990 and worked as a computer programmer until his retirement in 2004, before resuming composition in 2007.

An article in The Times in 1966 referred to Gordon Crosse as 'the most exciting composer to have appeared in Britain since Richard Rodney Bennett'.
