Lassus often used secular themes as the basis for his Masses, sometimes incorporating melodies from songs with texts not typically suitable for liturgical use.

Composer Biography

Roland de Lassus, a composer with an immense international reputation in the 16th century, was chosen by the Council of Trent to provide model works for new liturgical requirements.

The recording sessions took place in October and April 2015 at the Saint-Sébastien church in Stavelot, Belgium.

Compositional Technique

The Missa Susanne un jour by Lassus preserves the five-part writing of the original chanson and inserts fragments of its polyphonic structure into each section of the Mass.
