Pietro Nacchini, born in Dalmatia, built approximately five hundred instruments during his career, many of which survive in Venice and other locations.

The two organs featured on this recording are located in the Basilica della Misericordia of Sant'Elpidio a Mare and were built by two of the greatest organ-builders of the Veneto: Pietro Nacchini and his pupil Gaetano Callido.
Instruments
Gaetano Callido, a native of Este, was also a prolific organ-builder, constructing four hundred instruments and being appointed organ-maker to St Mark's in Venice in 1770.
Historical Context
Organ improvisation has a centuries-old tradition, as evidenced by Girolamo Diruta's 16th-century organ treatise Il Transilvano, which describes a duel between two organs at St Mark's in Venice.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded on the Gaetano Callido (1785) and Pietro Nacchini (1757) organs at the Basilica Pontificia Maria SS. della Misericordia in S. Elpidio a Mare, Italy, from June 10th to 12th, 2002.
Performer Biography
Luigi Celeghin, one of the organists on this recording, is Emeritus Professor of Organ at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome and honorary inspector with the Ministry of Cultural Activities for early instruments in Italy.
Compositional Technique
The works on this album are dialogues for two organs, originating from the practice of alternatim, where the instrument adds to and draws inspiration from complex polyphonic textures.
