Historical Context
The restoration of the Sauer organ at St. Thomas Leipzig, which began in 1988 and ended in 2005, played a vital role in changing views on 19th-century organ building, which was previously seen as a period of decay.
Instruments
Wilhelm Sauer, the organ builder, studied with Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in France, which influenced his inclusion of French-style stops in his organs, including the one at St. Thomas Leipzig.
Performer Biography
Ullrich Böhme, the organist on this recording, initiated the restoration of the large Sauer organ and designed the new Bach organ at St. Thomas Leipzig.
Recording & Production
This recording commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Sauer organ in its present layout and is the first recording made after its restoration was completed.
Instruments
The Sauer organ at St. Thomas Leipzig, originally built in 1889 with 63 stops, was expanded in 1908 to its current size of 88 stops under the supervision of Wilhelm Sauer, the organ builder.
