Marc Coppey, the cellist on this recording, won the Bach Competition Leipzig at age eighteen, receiving both the First Prize and a Special Prize for best Bach interpretation.

Shostakovich dedicated both of his cello concertos to Mstislav Rostropovich, a cellist and close friend who was also a distinct musical personality of the twentieth century.
