Stephen Dodgson, the composer, was conscripted into the Royal Navy in 1942 at age 18 and experienced active service in the Atlantic.

Dodgson studied French horn and musical theory at the Royal College of Music after being discharged from the Royal Navy, and later composition at Cambridge.
