Dohnányi studied piano with István Thomán, a former pupil of Liszt, and composition with Hans Koessler, a German composer and admirer of Brahms, at the Budapest Music Academy.

Dohnányi's Piano Quintet in C minor, Op. 1, published in 1895, was highly praised by Brahms, who reportedly declared he could not have done better himself.

Ernö von Dohnányi, the Hungarian composer, was born in Poszony (modern-day Bratislava) in 1877, where his father, an amateur musician, taught at the Catholic Gymnasium.
