Double Bach
Did you know?
1/6Album & Artwork
The album title "Double Bach" refers to the concept of contemporary composers writing "doubles" (variations) of Bach's original movements, just as Bach himself added doubles to his suite.
Interpretation
Annette Bik, the violinist, commissioned four contemporary composers to write new "doubles" for each of Bach's main movements in the Partita in h-Moll, BWV 1002.
Compositional Technique
The contemporary composers were asked to create works that could stand alone and be approximately the same length as the Bach originals they were based on.
Performer Biography
Annette Bik, the violinist on this album, is a founding member of Klangforum Wien, an ensemble with whom she performs globally as a soloist and chamber musician.
Interpretation
The album features works by Eva Reiter, Simone Movio, Andreas Lindenbaum, and Bernhard Gander, who each created a contemporary "double" for a movement from Bach's Partita in h-Moll.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Annette Bik's project aims to directly connect and harmonize the seemingly different worlds of early music and new music, a desire spurred by her involvement with contemporary music.
