Performer Biography

Peter-Philipp Staemmler, the cellist, plays a valuable 19th-century Jean Baptiste Vuillaume cello from Paris, on loan from the Deutscher Musikinstrumentenfonds.

Recording & Production

The recording sessions for this album took place in Berlin, Germany, from October 9-11, 2009, at the Siemensvilla.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Miaskovsky was a very patriotic person who remained faithful to his homeland, and his music, though generally conservative, demands high expressiveness in its elegiac and melancholy tonal language.

Composition History

Nikolai Miaskovsky, a highly respected Russian composer, composed his First Sonata for Cello in 1911 and later revised it in 1945.

Performer Biography

Duo Staemmler, consisting of brothers Peter-Philipp Staemmler (cello) and Hansjacob Staemmler (piano), has been performing together successfully since 1998.

Recording & Production

This debut CD is a co-production with Deutscher Musikrat Projekt gGmbH and Deutschlandradio Kultur.
