Alberto Ginastera, born in Buenos Aires in 1916, is widely regarded as the greatest Argentine composer and one of the most important Latin American composers of his time.
Composition History
The Sonata, Op. 49, one of Ginastera's last works, was a personal gift to his wife, Argentine cellist Aurora Nátola, and bears the heading 'A mi querrida Aurora'.
Instruments
The cello played on this recording was made by David Tecchler in 1701 and was generously loaned by Kenneth Warren and Son, Ltd.
