The Vlach Quartet Prague continues the tradition of the famous Vlach Quartet, led by violinist Josef Vlach, who was the father of the current quartet's violinist, Jana Vlachová.
Composition History
The 'Cypresses' songs, which Dvořák later arranged for string quartet, were dedicated to his pupil, the young actress Josefina Čermáková, with whom he was in love.

Dvořák's music gained wider recognition when his application for an Austrian government award brought it to the attention of Johannes Brahms, who helped arrange for its publication.
Composer Biography
Before becoming a full-time composer, Dvořák earned a living as a viola-player in a band that later formed the nucleus of the Czech Provisional Theatre Orchestra.

Dvořák was invited to New York to direct the National Conservatory of Music, with the aim of fostering American national music, following the example of Czech national music.

The Vlach Quartet Prague has won several awards, including First Prize in the International String Quartet Competition in Portsmouth in 1985 and prizes from the Czech Society for Chamber Music and the Czech Music Fund.
