Composer Biography

Dvořák earned his living as a viola-player in a band that later formed the nucleus of the Czech Provisional Theatre Orchestra, where Bedřich Smetana, a prominent Czech composer, was appointed conductor.

The Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra (OSN) is the oldest symphony orchestra active in Spain, founded in 1879 by the composer and violinist Pablo Sarasate.

Composition History

Dvořák's Mass in D, Op. 86, was originally written for his friend Josef Hlávka, a Czech architect and patron, for the consecration of a chapel at Hlávka's country-house, with Dvořák's wife, Anna, singing the mezzo-soprano part.

Composer Biography

Dvořák was invited to become director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, an institution intended to foster American music, and his work there influenced his Symphony 'From the New World'.

Composition History

The Te Deum, Op. 103, was commissioned in 1892 by Jeanette Thurber, founder of the American National Conservatory in New York, for a Columbus quatercentenary celebration.

Antonín Dvořák, the composer, was born in 1841, the son of a butcher and innkeeper, and was initially expected to follow the family trade.

Composition History

Dvořák's music gained wider recognition and publication after Johannes Brahms, the famous German composer, helped arrange for his Moravian Duets to be published, leading to the commission of the Slavonic Dances.
