George Dyson, the composer, was born into a working-class family in industrial West Yorkshire, the son of a blacksmith.

Dyson, the composer, won an open scholarship to London's Royal College of Music in 1900 and later became its Director in 1937, the first alumnus to hold the position.

Dyson's Symphony in G major, featured on this album, premiered in 1937 with the composer conducting the London Symphony Orchestra at Queen's Hall.

Critical Reception

Despite being chosen for the Three Choirs Festival in 1938, Dyson's Symphony was largely forgotten after the 1940s until its revival in 1989.

Historical Context

During World War I, Dyson, the composer, became known for producing a widely disseminated training pamphlet on grenade warfare as a brigade grenadier officer.

Performer Biography

David Lloyd-Jones, the conductor on this album, founded Opera North in 1978 at the invitation of the Arts Council of Great Britain, serving as its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for twelve seasons.
