Composer Biography
John Gardner, the composer, was born in Manchester in 1917, but was raised in Ilfracombe, North Devon, where his family had practiced medicine for three generations.
Composer's Artistic Vision
John Gardner preferred his music to stand on its own, rarely providing detailed program notes, and found naming pieces to be a difficult task.
Performer Biography
Peter Donohoe, the pianist, studied with Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod in Paris and gained international recognition after his success at the 1982 International Tchaikovsky Competition.

This recording was made at Henry Wood Hall, Glasgow, Scotland, from November 28-30, 2006, with Andrew Walton as producer and editor.

John Gardner's grandfather, John Twiname, and his father, Alfred Linton, both wrote music, with his grandfather having published pieces of parlor music.
Composition History
The Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat, Op. 34, was commissioned by Alfred Blundell, an old Wellingtonian who was not a musician but enjoyed facilitating the creation of new music.
