Emil Frey won the Grand Prix in composition at the international Anton Rubinstein competition in St Petersburg in 1910, leading to an invitation to teach at the Moscow Conservatoire.

After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Emil Frey was forced to return to Zurich, where he founded a piano-soloist class at the Conservatoire.
