The Piano Quintet No. 1, Op. 1, was premiered by Dohnányi himself in Budapest in autumn 1895, and he was later invited to play it in Vienna before Brahms.

The Cello Sonata, Op. 8, is dedicated to Ludwig Lebell, a cellist and one of Dohnányi's regular concert partners, who premiered the work in London in 1899.
