Erwin Schulhoff, the composer, was recommended to the Prague Conservatory at age seven by Antonín Dvořák, the famous Czech composer.
Composition History
Erwin Schulhoff's 'Bürger als Edelmann' (The Bourgeois Gentleman) was commissioned by the National Theatre in Prague in 1926 to update Molière's drama with contemporary rhythms.
Recording & Production
This album includes recordings from two different sessions: the Piano Concerto op. 11 was recorded in Cologne in 1998, and 'Der Bürger als Edelmann' was recorded in Berlin in 1999.
Compositional Technique
Schulhoff's Piano Concerto op. 11 features a cadenza in the first movement that is an impressive 100 bars long, making up a quarter of the entire movement.

Erwin Schulhoff studied composition with Max Reger, a prominent German composer, in Leipzig and later received lessons from Claude Debussy, the influential French composer, in 1913.
