Cultural Impact

The Festmusik, Op. 45a, a suite from Tcherepnin's opera The Wedding of Sobeide, continued to be heard occasionally even after the opera itself had a limited run.

Composition History

Tcherepnin's Piano Concerto No. 3 was composed during extensive travels in 1931-32, with its first movement conceived in association with the idea of travel.

Composer Biography

Alexander Tcherepnin, born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1899, relocated with his family to Tiflis, Georgia, at age 19 due to revolutionary privations.

This recording was supported by the Tcherepnin Society, an organization dedicated to the composer Alexander Tcherepnin.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Tcherepnin's six piano concertos show greater diversity than those of other composer-pianists, with some reflecting a 'heroic' Romantic ideal and others a chamber-music partnership.

Compositional Technique

Tcherepnin developed a nine-step scale, codified in his Twelve Preludes for Cello and Piano, Op. 38.

Performer Biography

Noriko Ogawa, the pianist on this recording, is a national celebrity in her native Japan and has received the Okura Prize for her outstanding contribution to music in Japan.
