The project was inspired by Eugénie De Mey's desire to present medieval women's songs and her experience singing Gregorian and medieval funeral chants during the pandemic.
Performer Biography
Eugénie De Mey, the lead artist, formed Trobar Project in 2019 as an artistic crucible for medieval music, interpretation, research, and experimentation.
Composer's Artistic Vision
The new compositions by Thierry De Mey aim to preserve a kind of abstraction in the text, allowing the music to breathe, and pay tribute to women who never reached their place of exile.
Cultural Impact
The piece "Would Never" by Thierry De Mey was inspired by Emma Gonzalez, an American teenager who recited the names of her friends killed in a high school shooting.
Album & Artwork
The album title, "Exils • Celles qui restent, Celles qui partent…" (Exiles • Those who stay, Those who leave…), refers to women from the Middle Ages who stayed home during the Crusades and women who embarked on perilous journeys.
Composition History
Thierry De Mey, a composer, was commissioned to write several new pieces for this program, grouped under the title "Would Never."
