Performer Biography

Lajos Lencsés, the oboist on this album, became principal oboe of the Radio Symphonic Orchestra of Stuttgart in 1971 and was described as 'one of the great oboists of our time' after winning the Diapason d'Or in 1990.

Composition History

The work Maschere was inspired by Gino Severini's illustrations of Commedia dell'arte figures and was composed for Severini's centenary in 1983.

Ferenc Farkas, an outstanding Hungarian composer and professor, studied with Ottorino Respighi in Rome, where he refined his taste, style, and craftsmanship.

Compositional Technique

Farkas's Piccola Musica di Concerto, originally a string quartet, uses advanced techniques, including playing with twelve-tone music, despite its seemingly archaic sound.

Composition History

The Old Hungarian Dances originated from Farkas's research for a historical film in the early 1940s, where he collected authentic material from 17th and 18th-century manuscripts.
