1/7Recording & Production
This is the third CD from Musicke & Mirth, following their previous recordings 'Music for two Lyra Viols' and 'Die Spinne im Netz'.
Interpretation
The performers on this recording use period instruments or their copies and perform from original scores, paying great attention to historical performance practice.
Historical Context
The album explores the profusion of highly virtuosic viola da gamba works created at the court of Frederick the Great and his successor Frederick William II in 18th-century Berlin.
Historical Context
At the time these works were composed, the viola da gamba was already past its zenith of success in other parts of Europe, making its prominence in Berlin unique.
Composer Biography
Ludwig Christian Hesse (1716-1772), a viola da gamba virtuoso, was employed at Frederick II's court and later taught the instrument to Crown Prince Frederick William II.
Compositional Technique
The works for viola da gamba from the Berlin court, many directly linked to Ludwig Christian Hesse, are technically demanding and feature parallel thirds in high positions, characteristic of the 'Berlin style'.
Performer Biography
Musicke & Mirth, founded by Jane Achtman and Irene Klein, focuses on less-known works for two viols, including music of the late German galant style.
