Benjamin Frith, the pianist on this recording, won first prize in the Rubinstein Piano Masters Competition and the top prize in the Busoni International Piano Competition.

John Field developed the poetic form of piano music known as the nocturne and was known for his delicate nuance and singing tone as a pianist.

Composer Biography

John Field, born in Dublin in 1782, was the son of a theatre violinist and began his musical training with his father and then with Neapolitan composer Tommaso Giordani.

Compositional Technique

John Field's Piano Concerto No. 7 is ingeniously structured in two movements, with its Rondo finale evoking the ballroom and Russia through a series of constant contrasts.

Recording & Production

The Northern Sinfonia, one of the orchestras on this album, has released a series of John Field piano concertos with Benjamin Frith for Naxos, in addition to other award-winning recordings.

Notable Performances

The premiere of John Field's Piano Concerto No. 7 in Paris on Christmas Day 1832 was attended by both Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt.

Composer Biography

As a young boy, John Field was an apprentice to Muzio Clementi, a leading piano teacher and businessman in London, who later took Field with him to Paris and Vienna.
