1/6Composer Biography
Gerald Finzi, the composer, cultivated his garden and orchard with old apple-tree varieties in danger of extinction, showing a passion for conservation.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Finzi held a certain mistrust of virtuosity for its own sake and was seldom interested in performers, always prioritizing the music itself.
Composer Biography
Finzi was deeply involved in searching out fresh music for his local amateur string group, the Newbury String Players, including untried works by young composers and neglected early English music.
Composition History
The Clarinet Concerto was first performed at the Three Choirs Festival in Hereford on September 9, 1949, with Finzi himself conducting.
Recording & Production
This album features two distinct recordings: the Clarinet Concerto was recorded in 1977 and the Cello Concerto in 1979, both digitally remastered in 2007.
Compositional Technique
Finzi's range of dissonance, as heard in the Cello Concerto, is solidly based on diatonicism, often using the clash of a minor ninth and major seventh.
