Charles Koechlin, born in Paris in 1867, was five years younger than Debussy and eight years older than Ravel, and his interests extended beyond music to photography, astronomy, and socialism.
Composition History
Reynaldo Hahn's suite of waltzes for two pianos, Le ruban dénoué, was composed during the early years of the First World War and published in 1917.
Interpretation
The performers chose to record Koechlin's Suite Op. 19 and the Four Sonatines Françaises Op. 60 on two pianos instead of as a piano duet, to avoid the clash of fingers inherent in Koechlin's scoring.
Cultural Impact
The American artist Paul Cadmus created an 'hommage à Reynaldo Hahn' in 1963, a painting titled Le ruban dénoué, which is exhibited at the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio.
Performer Biography
Martin Jones, one of Britain's most highly regarded solo pianists, made his London debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and his New York debut at Carnegie Hall in 1968.
Composition History
Charles Koechlin composed three short pieces, Pour bercer un convalescent, in 1915 for Henri Bardac, a sergeant seriously wounded at the Battle of Aisne during World War I.
