Friedrich Cerha, the composer, was politically active as a high school student, deserted twice from the German Wehrmacht, and survived the end of World War II as a mountain guide in Tyrol.

Friedrich Cerha reconstructed the unfinished third act of Alban Berg's opera Lulu, which premiered in its completed version in Paris in 1979.
