This recording uses two historic organs from the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna: one by Lorenzo da Prato (1471-75) and another by Baldassarre Malamini (1596).

Giovanni Gabrieli, the composer, was the nephew of renowned Venetian organist Andrea Gabrieli, who took financial responsibility for him and trained him musically.

Performer Biography
Leo van Doeselaar, one of the organists, was appointed professor of organ at the Universität der Künste in Berlin in 1995 and is the titular organist of the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Interpretation
The instrumental pieces on this album, designated 'per ogni sorte di stromenti' (for all sorts of instruments), are performed by two organs, a common practice in the 16th and early 17th centuries.
Performer Biography
Liuwe Tamminga, one of the organists, is considered a major specialist in 16th- and 17th-century Italian organ repertoires and is the organist of the historic organs at the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna.
