At age sixteen, Glazunov completed his First Symphony, which was successfully performed under the direction of Balakirev, a leader of the Russian nationalist group 'The Five'.
Critical Reception
Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov's former teacher, admired the music of Les Ruses d'amour for its "unusual mastery of writing and extremely pictorial beauty."
Compositional Technique
Glazunov's Les Ruses d'amour incorporates earlier French dance melodies, opening with a dance from Thoinot Arbeau's 1598 Orchésographie, despite its Russian orchestral coloring.
