Composer Biography
Benjamin Godard, a child prodigy violinist, trained at the Paris Conservatoire, studying composition and harmony with Napoléon Henri Reber and violin with Henry Vieuxtemps.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Godard's musical style followed the tradition of Mendelssohn and Schumann, and he disliked the 'rhetorical excesses' of Wagner, partly due to Wagner's antisemitism.
Cultural Impact
Only one of Godard's pieces, the 'Berceuse' from his 1888 opera Jocelyn, remains widely remembered and has been recorded by famous artists like Bing Crosby and Jascha Heifetz.
Composer Biography
Godard died from tuberculosis at the age of forty-five, having produced a vast amount of music including eight operas, five symphonies, and over one hundred songs.
