Goldmark's musical education was largely self-taught after the Conservatory closed due to the 1848 revolution, and he was wrongly accused of murder.
Critical Reception
Johannes Brahms praised Goldmark's 'Rustic Wedding' Symphony, saying, "That is the best thing you have done; clear-cut and faultless, it sprang into being a finished thing, like Minerva from the head of Jupiter."

Goldmark, the composer, admired Wagner and even established a Wagner Society in Vienna in 1872, yet he stated he was "unable to be a pioneer and unwilling to be a fellow traveller."
