Giovanni Sgambati, an Italian composer, was born in Rome in 1841 to an Italian father and an English mother, and spent most of his life in Rome.

The Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, led by Francesco La Vecchia, was a privately funded orchestra that made many world premiere recordings of 19th and 20th-century Italian composers.

Composition History

The score of Sgambati's Symphony No. 2 vanished after his death, but the orchestral parts survived and were used by Rosalind Trübger to reconstruct the entire work.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Giovanni Sgambati devoted himself exclusively to instrumental music at a time when opera dominated the Italian music scene, aiming to take Italian music towards a new future.

Composer Biography

Sgambati became a pupil and friend of Franz Liszt, who lived in Rome from 1861 to 1869, and through Liszt, Sgambati met other figures like Wagner, Grieg, and Brahms.
