Pianist Joop Celis began piano lessons with his father at age nine and won a Dutch competition for young pianists at fifteen, later studying with Paul Badura-Skoda.

The Steinway D Grand Piano used for this recording was previously housed in a concert hall in Eindhoven and played by renowned musicians such as Arthur Rubinstein and Alicia de Larrocha.

Composition History
The Intermezzo from the opera Goyescas was composed in a single evening by Granados under pressure, to satisfy the director's demand for more music between two tableaux.

Enrique Granados, the Spanish composer, was deeply inspired by the art of Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, whom he considered 'the representative genius of Spain'.

The Goyescas suite for solo piano, Granados's most famous work, began in 1909 and was completed in two parts by December 1911.

The opera Goyescas is unusual in that its music was composed before its libretto, with Granados asking journalist Fernando Periquet to provide text for his existing music.
