Composer Biography

Before dedicating himself to composition, Iain Hamilton was an apprentice engineer for Handley Page, an aircraft manufacturing company, from 1939 to 1946.

This album features recordings from the Richard Itter Broadcast Collection, a private archive of over 1500 works recorded from BBC transmissions between 1952 and 1996.

Iain Hamilton, the composer, was born in Glasgow in 1922 and moved to London at age seven, where he was educated at Mill Hill School.

The Richard Itter Broadcast Collection, from which these recordings are taken, was initially recorded on magnetic tape, with important performances also transferred to acetate discs.

Critical Reception

Anthony Milner, a fellow composer, admired Iain Hamilton's music for its avoidance of 'cliquishness', its force, passionate expression, and a beauty that was 'individual and compelling'.
