Composer Biography

In Italy, Handel's main patron was Marquis Francesco Ruspoli, who commissioned many secular cantatas from him.

Composition History

In 1707, Handel, a German Protestant, received an important commission from Cardinal Carlo Colonna to compose sacred music for the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Rome.
