Haydn, A. Stamitz & C. Stamitz: Concertos

Flute and oboe are co-stars of Ana de la Vega and Ramón Ortega Quero's album with Trondheim Soloists. The two wind players perform two of Haydn's Concertos for 2 Lire organizzate (antique instruments similar to a hurdy-gurdy), arranged for their instruments. Carl Stamitz's Concerto for Flute, Oboe and Orchestra, as well as his virtuoso Flute Concerto, complete the collection.

Recording & Production

This album was recorded in June 2019 at the Selbu Kirke in Trondheim, Norway, with recording and mixing handled by Karel Bruggeman and Erdo Groot from Polyhymnia International B.V.

Compositional Technique

The request for Haydn's Lira Organizzata concertos specified writing 'as though for oboes,' which is why these works are now performed using combinations of recorders, flutes, or flutes and oboes without changing the notes.

Performer Biography

Ana de la Vega, the flautist on this album, was inspired to play the flute at age seven after hearing Jean-Pierre Rampal's recording of Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto.

Composer Biography

Carl Stamitz's father, Johann Stamitz, was a highly influential composer and leader of the Mannheim orchestra, credited with consistently using a 4-movement structure for symphonies.

Instruments

The Lira Organizzata, for which Haydn composed, was a musical curiosity similar to a hurdy-gurdy, featuring a crank-operated miniature pipe organ and strings bowed by the crank.

Performer Biography

Ramón Ortega Quero, the oboist, won First Prize at the prestigious ARD Music Competition in Munich in 2007 and has been Principal Oboe of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2008.

Composition History

Joseph Haydn's concertos for 2 Lire Organizzate were commissioned by King Ferdinand of Naples, who wanted to expand the repertoire for his favorite instrument.
