Gilbert Kalish was the pianist of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players for thirty years and a founding member of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, a new music ensemble active in the 1960s and 70s.

The album was recorded in September 2013 at the Disler Performance Hall, Granoff Music Center, Tufts University, Medford, MA.

Composition History

Haydn's Sonata No. 62 in E flat, Hob. XVI: 52, was composed during his second visit to London in 1794-95 for Therese Jansen Bartolozzi, a leading pianist in the English capital.

Gilbert Kalish chose to record late works by Haydn, Schubert, and Beethoven after the producers, Becky and David Starobin, offered to produce a recording for him.

Beethoven's Bagatelles, op. 119, were compiled from earlier pieces and a new one in response to a request for 'Kleinigkeiten' (trifles) from Leipzig publisher Carl Friedrich Peters, who initially found them too small.
