Three of the four symphonies on this disc, numbers 22 to 24, were composed in 1764, during Haydn's early employment with the Esterházy family.

Prince Nikolaus Esterházy reorganized his court's musical infrastructure, enlarging the orchestra and employing many of the greatest instrumentalists of the day, which demanded a steady stream of symphonies from Haydn.

Roy Goodman, the director, reassessed the tempos of Andante and Minuet movements, which he believes are often performed too slowly today, based on markings by Hummel and Czerny.
