Antonio Vivaldi, known as 'Il prete rosso' (the red priest) due to his hair color, was ordained in 1703 but soon left the church for a musical career.
Composition History
Vivaldi composed much of his music, including The Four Seasons, for the highly gifted students at the Pio Ospedale della Pietà, one of four orphanages for girls in Venice where he was maestro di violino.
Compositional Technique
Vivaldi's The Four Seasons concertos broke new ground by depicting poetic ideas in detail and showcasing technical ingenuity, such as rapid string-crossing and high-flying left-hand virtuosity.

The recording of this album took place at All Saints, Orpington on March 4th, which coincidentally is Antonio Vivaldi's birthday.
