Franz Joseph Haydn enjoyed job security, access to a good orchestra, and freedom to compose what he liked during his nearly 30-year tenure as court composer for the Esterházy family.

This album was recorded live at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon, with Symphony No. 64 recorded in 2013 and Symphonies Nos. 53 and 96 in 2016.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Haydn believed his isolation at the Esterházy court forced him to become original, as he was free to experiment and alter his compositions.
Instruments
Haydn often added trumpets and timpani to his D major symphonies because, in his time, valveless trumpets could only play in a limited number of keys.
Performer Biography
Carlos Kalmar, the conductor, was born in Uruguay to Austrian parents and began violin studies at age six, moving to Austria at 15 to study conducting.
Compositional Technique
Haydn favored D major for his symphonies more than any other key, composing 24 different symphonies in that key.
