Composition History
Holmboe's last major piece for violin, Haiduc, was written in 1993 at the request of American violinist Janet Packer, who visited him at his home.
Performer Biography
Johannes Søe Hansen, the violinist on this recording, won the gold medal in the Berlingske Tidende music Competition at age 14 and was a prizewinner in the International Carl Nielsen Violin Competition.

Composer Biography
Vagn Holmboe, the composer, was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Music in 1925 after an audition with national composer Carl Nielsen, who listened to him play violin and piano.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Holmboe's violin works are striking and extroverted, often inspired by folk music from the Balkans, Transylvania, and the Danish fiddling tradition.
Compositional Technique
The title of Holmboe's last violin work, Haiduc, refers to outlawed freedom fighters in the Balkans who struggled against the Ottoman Empire.
Composer Biography
Holmboe's interest in Arab music was sparked by his elder brother Knud, a correspondent in the Middle East who converted to Islam and was murdered in Saudi Arabia in 1931.
