Composer Biography
Robert Schumann, born in 1810, was 40 years old when he wrote the earliest works on this album and had only a few years left before being committed to a psychiatric clinic.
Interpretation
The Duo Escarlata dedicates itself to music from all periods and creates its own finely worked out transcriptions, sometimes having the accordion play a melody originally for cello.
Album & Artwork
The album title, 'Im Volkston' (In Folk Tone), and the Duo Escarlata's name and emblem, which features the scarlet of amaryllis petals, reflect the album's concept.
Interpretation
Duo Escarlata, consisting of cellist Daniela Hunziker and accordionist Ina Hofmann, uses an unusual instrument combination that places each work in a new light.
Compositional Technique
Bohuslav Martinů's Sept arabesques were intended to introduce young musicians to the modern tonal language of the 1920s and 1930s, incorporating syncopations from ragtime and early jazz.
