Georg Philipp Telemann, as Hamburg's town cantor and church music director from 1721 to 1767, was responsible for providing music for regular church services and special occasions.
Composition History
Telemann also composed for Altona, Hamburg's neighboring town, which belonged to the state of Greater Denmark from 1647 to 1864.
Compositional Technique
The small scoring of 'Kommt, lasset uns anbeten' (TVWV 2:5), without viola, trumpets, or timpani, was chosen to suit the small size of the St Job's Hospital church, which was only 20 x 12 meters.
Performer Biography
Ira Hochman, the harpsichordist and director of barock werk hamburg, made her conducting debut with Rossini's 'Il Turco in Italia' at the Hamburg State Opera in 2005.
Composition History
The original performance material for 'Kommt, lasset uns anbeten' (TVWV 2:5) was rediscovered in 2001 by the present author in the Hamburg City Archive, where it had remained unused.
Compositional Technique
In Telemann's 'Geschlagene Pauken, auf!' (TVWV 13:14), the timpani play an unusual role as a solo instrument in the opening aria.
