Isang Yun moved to Europe in 1956 to study anew and connect with the Western European avant-garde, studying composition in West Berlin with Boris Blacher and Schönberg pupil Josef Rufer.

Composer Biography
Isang Yun, the composer, received the Seoul Culture Prize in 1955 for his String Quartet I and other chamber works, which was the highest honor he could receive in his native Korea.
Interpretation
The performance tradition of Isang Yun's works requires careful attention to specific sound formation, accentuation, articulation, phrasing, and the characteristic execution of glissandi and trills, also incorporating traditional Korean music idioms.
Performer Biography
Holger Groschopp, the pianist on this album, studied composition under Isang Yun, the composer featured on this album, and also studied piano and song interpretation.
Interpretation
The performers on this album belong to a younger generation and did not have the opportunity to work directly with the composer, Isang Yun, on these pieces.
Historical Context
Isang Yun was abducted by the South Korean secret police from West Berlin to Seoul and imprisoned and tortured for alleged forbidden contacts with North Korea from June 1967 to spring 1969.
