1/6Performer Biography
Sophie Gent, the violinist, joined Ensemble Masques in 2003, and Olivier Fortin, the harpsichordist and director, had a long-held wish to record Bach violin concertos with her.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Bach and Telemann were contemporaries, sharing not only their German nationality but also many human traits.
Compositional Technique
Bach's violin concertos are considered a model of baroque repertoire for the instrument, combining instrumental virtuosity with profound musical expression.
Interpretation
Olivier Fortin, the director, chose Albinoni's sinfonie to link the concertos, as they require all ensemble musicians and provide a transition between the soloists and concertos.
Interpretation
Ensemble Masques aims for spontaneity in their performances, never playing a piece the same way twice, and experimenting with ideas that emerge during discussions, rehearsals, or concerts.
Performer Biography
Kathleen Kajioka, the violist, has been with Ensemble Masques since its formation and is highlighted in this recording as a soloist in a rare viola concerto by Telemann.
