Compositional Technique
Josquin's Missa Hercules Dux Ferrarie is constructed by taking the vowels from the name HERCULES DUX FERRARIE and translating them into musical notes using the Guidonian hexachord solmisation syllables.
Composition History
The Missa Hercules Dux Ferrarie was written for Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, possibly when Josquin was working at his court around 1503/04.
Critical Reception
The Tallis Scholars' 1987 recording of Josquin's Missa La sol fa re mi and Missa Pange lingua was the first early music recording to win Gramophone magazine's Record of the Year award.

Josquin, like Beethoven in his symphonies, used the same performer lineup to create dramatically individual sound-worlds for each new composition.

This album is the ninth and final release in The Tallis Scholars' Josquin Mass cycle, which began in January 1986.
